A Head for Hats - My Business Journey

Just in time for the Cheltenham Festival and Ladies Day at the races this week, we heard a fascinating talk at our Connect Business Lunch, all about hats!

Tricia Designs is a new and exciting designer specialising in bespoke fascinators, hats and other accessories to suit your needs and occasions. This month, she had us all joining in for an interactive talk with a hands on approach to a wide variety of designs for the head.

Women's Business Club networking in style! Perhaps we should make the hats a permanent feature?

First, we looked briefly at the history of hats! Did you know, hats were actually originally worn by men not women? They were worn in the military for protection and status. In fact, it was Henry VIII that brought hats and fashion into court and ladies started wearing lace doilies on their heads! Thankfully we have moved on from there and now get to enjoy such beautiful and extravagant hats and fascinators!

The silhouettes of the ages, showing the different shapes of the 'head' and how style has evolved!

Tricia then went on to share her business journey, and how she came to be where she is today! We were delighted to hear that her first customer and the reason that she is in the 'hat' business today was all because of her daughters little push when she was looking for a fascinator to match a dress, but couldn't find one anywhere! As Tricia was already skilled, she decided to give it a go - bought the materials and made a beautiful fascinator for her daughter. In fact she managed to put it all together with just two tiny pieces of thread from a hotel sewing kit!

The ladies listening intently to Tricia's fascinating business story!

With the success of her daughters fascinator, Tricia continued to work with friends and family to start up her business and customer base until working with a boutique who would take customer orders for her and sell her designs. Although working with the boutique seemed to be a successful step for her business, there did prove to be some problems with the customer relationships. As Tricia did not deal directly with the customers, there was too much room for error forcing her to be more careful with the way she deals with customers and making the decision to always work directly with the customer.

Other challenges she faced (which applies to all creative businesses!) included finding her unique style and learning what worked and what didn't. Once she found her style, it was important that she stuck with it. This meant being able to turn down jobs that didn't fit within her style or just wouldn't work for her.

So What did I learn?
First of all, I learn't a lot I didn't know about hats! I even learnt about the different face shapes, what kind of hats suit and how to make any hat flattering just my moving its position on my head!

But I also found a few key points that I could apply whilst running my own business.

1) Businesses start small! Tricia started with just her friends and family, does that sound at all familiar? She is now able to pick and choose her clients to suit her!

2) Customer relationships are essential. Make the time to get to know your clients so you can deliver an exceptional service!

Celebrating the Achievements of an Outstanding Year in Business!

It's official, party season has begun! And the Cheltenham Women's Business Club have already been to a fair few with plenty of reason to celebrate! Wednesday marked the very last Business Lunch of 2014 and a joyous celebration of Christmas and a fantastic year for the club.

"Yummy business lunch today with Cheltenham Women's Business Club  Merry Christmas ladies!"
- Amy Box, Hold my Hand Manicures

We enjoyed a buzzing room full of fantastic business women eager to get to know each other and browse our Christmas Stalls to do a spot of much needed Christmas shopping! We then gathered around our festively decorated table to hear a short presentation about the years achievements together as a club.

"A beautiful lunch
with lovely business ladies!"
"Fabulous lunch with lovely ladies
& inspirational speaker"
"Thank you for the warm welcome.
An enjoyable & interesting meeting."

This year we have had the privilege to welcome around 150 business women to our monthly Business Lunch meetings! We have also been honored to support over 20 members over this year and interact with over 300 members of our Facebook and LinkedIn groups!

Just last month, we held our very first Maximise Conference & Awards ceremony! The conference was a huge success and the awards ceremony was a wonderful celebration of achievements across the whole of the Women's Business Club franchise! The Cheltenham Women's Business Club celebrated massive achievements together at the awards and managed to walk away with several of the distinguished awards.

We are so so proud of our Maximise Award winners! And here's why..
Out of 9 UK Business Clubs in Gloucester and South Wales with around 60 members in total, our members managed to win 6 out of the 15 awards! So please do send your huge congratulations to our Cheltenham members!

Wait, there's more...

This year we have been proud to support the Children's Society as our nominated charity for the year for the whole of the Women's Business Club and have taken every opportunity to raise funds through our various events. I was very excited to present Roseann, who is a member of the Cheltenham Women's Business Club with a giant cheque this week! Although we will be nominating a new charity to support in 2015, we will still continue to support the Children's Society in Cheltenham as one of our Cheltenham Women's Business Club members.
....

To top of the year (and the meeting!), I would just like to thank our very loyal members and congratulate them on their phenomenal growth over the course of the year.  Here's to our members who have completed our Business Growth Workshops - Well done! And I look forward to seeing your businesses grow and prosper in the year ahead!

Well done and thank you to our loyal members Amy Box, Val Lomas, Fiona Jones, Sabrina Collett & Hazel Robinson!

.
We were also able to present a very special gift to Hazel Robinson of Nuts About Style! The ultimate raffle prize.

Over the year we have been collecting funds from our raffle to put into a gift voucher format and give to one of the ladies who has been in business for 18 months or less. This is so we can support someone new in business through our services at Women's Business Club.

This year, Hazel was nominated by other members of the club and chosen because of her outstanding commitment to her business and to the club. Hazel has been in business for just over a year, and to her credit, has done a phenomenal job! Not only has she poured her dedication and time into her business, she has also given the same investment to the club by taking up regular speaking slots across all the clubs and managing the Health and Beauty Zone at our Maximise Conference.

We would now like to support Hazel with this gift voucher of £85 so we can invest in her business and help her push it to the next level! I look forward to seeing where your journey takes you this time next year!

So here's to a wonderful 2014 and an even better 2015!

If you would like to know more about Women's Business Club, I would love to invite you along to our very first Business Lunch of 2015 on the 7th January!

Your Vision, Your Life - Women's Business Lunch

This week we had our very popular Cheltenham Women's Business Club Lunch. The room was buzzing with excitement as the ladies arrived to a room full of vibrant displays as our members showcased their products around the room. There was even an opportunity to have 15 minute taster session of Shiatsu!

"I wanted to get in touch to say a sincere thank you for asking me to the event. I must say that the group members seemed very kind and supportive, and your speaker was engaging and informative."

When we were all shopped out, we gathered around the lunch table to hear from all the wonderful business ladies and their businesses, thinking about any referrals we may be able to pass on or if there was anything we could do to help assist and move each business forward before breaking again for a delicious lunch! We ate and we chatted, did a spot more shopping and then got ourselves ready to hear from our main speaker on the interesting subject of Vision Boards!

"I'm wearing my new top now and it's amazing!"  |   "Lovely stuff - can't wait to wear it"  |  "Love these clothes, such quality"

Life wasn't always so glorious for Vanessa and during her presentation she will share with you how she turned things around from looking after her husband who was in ill health (and is now a successful body builder), from being over 5 stone overweight to achieving her ideal body and how she has become the UK’s most successful sales consultant and proved to herself miracles do come true.

Vanessa frankly shares how that was not always the case and choosing to take control of her own life and becoming clear about what her future would look like has made all the difference, beginning with a small picture on a board!

"What a fab day today at Cheltenham Women's Business Club ~ met some lovely people, the food was yummy, feeling inspired & motivated by Vanessa Stotter & her amazing vision board presentation , well worth the journey down to Cheltenham"

After being thoroughly inspired and raring to get back to implementing these wonderful new ideas into our lives, we took a moment to really support one of our business ladies through the 'Wonderbra Session'.

"How do we find more hours in the day?" Was the question, and I will tell you - we had some great answers round the table!

"Thanks to the Cheltenham Women's Business Club for an inspiring lunch today!"

So we have shopped, been pampered, filled our stomachs and mind with good food and great ideas, been supported and showed our own support to others and now another opportunity to give back and have some more fun! We closed the meeting with a raffle, the prize donated from one of the members and the proceeds being saved up to help out one of our members who has not yet been in business for longer than 18 months!

Skeleton invited into Women’s Business Club Closet

Famous Cheltenham skeleton, Bony Tony, has received an official invitation to join the Cheltenham Women's Business Club by Franchise Director Angela De Souza and local director Lorah-Kelly Beard in commiseration of being put out to pasture. Angela and Lorah-Kelly took pity on Tony, who has lost his permanent home, and not only entered his selfie-with-a-skeleton competition, but also invited him as a guest to the Club along with the Regency Clinic owner’s wife, Fru Grace.

Many a child has fond memories of waving at Bony Tony, who has, for the past 14 years, resided in the window of the Regency Clinic on the Hales Road. He’s been showing patients how their bodies work in order that they understand their injuries and treatment ever since the Clinic first opened its doors.

Unfortunately for Bony Tony, a recent move to new premises saw him replaced by a younger, more modern model, and with no street-facing window in the Clinic’s new building further down the Hales Road, Bony Tony has had to find other ways to remain in the spotlight. He has therefore positioned himself outside the Clinic, and is encouraging people to take a ‘selfie’ with him. And just in case the people of Cheltenham aren’t that into selfies, Tony is offering a free massage for the best photograph to entice people along. Tony is only outside the Clinic during opening hours for fear of kidnapping, so get cracking and get your photo taken with him – your last chance is on Saturday 4th October, and the competition closes on Sunday 5th October. To enter, or to vote, visit http://www.regency-clinic.co.uk.

Women's Business Club Networking Feedback!

We had such a fantastic networking event this last week! With such a wonderful group of ladies and such a variety of businesses represented we really experienced a buzz in the meeting that still hasn't quite worn off!
There were meaningful connections made, real conversations happening and most importantly a really supportive, encouraging and uplifting environment that allowed us all just to relax, be ourself and talk about our businesses together in a natural and informal way!
But that's enough rambling from me, I want to hear what you have to say! Here's a few photos and a little bit of feedback from the lovely ladies!

Women's Business Club in the Media.

Lots has been going on with our members this week! From the newspaper to the TV, our business women are getting out there taking their businesses into the media.

Last month we heard from one of our fantastic speakers, Geraldine McCullagh who is an expert in the media with years of experience in broadcast media as a presenter/producer, journalist, manager and editor in the West Midlands. She not only inspired us to make use of the media as businesses, but taught us exactly how to go about doing it!

So today, I want to share with you some of our members media successes only this week!

  June 2014

Cheltenham Social Group with Helen Eade

A new addition this month, Helen made it to the Gloucestershire Echo with one of her Cheltenham Social Group Events! She went through the trouble of organising a photo shoot especially to accompany her article which made it into print.

  May 2014

Creation to Cherish with Fiona Jones of Sunago Unique Creations

This week, Fiona made to the newspapers with her joint venture, a children's jewellery making workshop for the community! The local Echo put together a fantastic article about the workshop, about the ladies businesses and their stories.

Lorah Kelly Creative Photography with Lorah-Kelly Beard

Lorah managed to get involved with the alleged Cheltenham Banksy art ending up in the newspaper, radio and local TV! Lorah was with Angela of Women's Business Club as she jumped to start off the #savethebanksy fund and got involved right away by donating to the cause. Angela then wrote a press release and took the local media by storm by providing and interesting local story with a focus on the community. Lorah and Angela had printed press in the local echo, a radio interview with BBC Radio Gloucestershire and a TV showcase with BBC Points West.

Mum's Business Club with Angela De Souza

Angela decided to start a networking meeting for all the mum's who were not able to make the regular meetings because of child care. Mum's can now bring their children along to a relaxed and informal networking meeting and hearing a short inspirational talk from Angela. This caught the eye of the local Echo newspaper!

  February 2014

Nuts About Style with Hazel Robinson

Hazel's Image makeover competition caught the media's attention and made it to the Worcester News as she partnered with several local businesses to give one winner a complete image makeover! And that's not all, when partnering with a different local business in putting on a fantastic charity Swish event, she made it into the Malvern Gazette!
